1401 EDC Desktop Case

A pocketknife and a flashlight are easy to lose in a deep drawer. The 1401 EDC Desktop Case gives smaller everyday-carry items a shallower, more deliberate arrangement: a broad top well above a single drawer, with a removable foam insert to keep pieces separated.

At 13-1/2 inches wide, the case leaves room to spread out a useful group of belongings without becoming a tall chest. The top well keeps the things you tend to reach for together in one place, while the drawer gives smaller pieces their own level. Check the compartment measurements against your equipment if you plan to store larger folding knives, watches, or other pieces where fit matters. The individual cutout dimensions in the foam insert are not specified.

Gerstner builds the 1401 in Dayton, Ohio. Tongue-and-groove construction, a felt-lined interior and the diamond mirror inside the lid connect it to the maker’s larger chests. Rubber feet keep the wood case off the desktop, and a single key locks the case. American Cherry is paired with brass hardware and brown felt; Golden Oak and Natural Walnut use nickel hardware and green felt.

The 1401 is wider and lower than the J1001 Just Right Box. That difference is more useful than the fact that both have one drawer: the 1401 gives you more room to lay things out, while the J1001 uses a smaller, taller footprint.
